HOSTA

 

Hostas are clump-forming, and grown primarily for their large, bold, heart-shaped leaves. In addition to green, blue and greyish tones, some cultivars have variegated or yellow-green foliage. The flowers are funnel-shaped and borne in racemes atop erect stems. They are usually white, mauve, or purple, they appear from mid-summer. Hostas prefer shaded conditions with moist, cool, rich, well-drained soil. Water and feed well during the growing season. Propagate by dividing as the first buds show. The young shoots are very vulnerable to slug and snail damage. They grow 16-20" (40-50cm) wide and 16" high (40cm)

DAYLILY

 

 

Daylilies are named because each of their funnel- to bell- shaped flowers lasts just one day, though they carry a succession of blooms from late spring until autumn. They form clumps of grassy or iris-like leaves. They are hardy and easily grown in sunny or part-shaded areas fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Propagate by dividing. They grow 16-48" (40-120cm) wide and 16-40" (40-100cm) high depending on variety.

CORAL BELLS

 

Coral Bells form a dense clump of basal foliage with rounded to kidney-shaped, toothed leaves on thin wiry leaf stalks. The branching flower stems are also very fine and from late spring to autumn carry sprays of tiny flowers. They are mostly hardy and adaptable and are suitable for perennial borders or rock gardens. Plant in full or half-sun with fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Remove flower stems as they fade. Propagate by division or from seed sown fresh in early autumn. They grow from 6-18" (15-45cm) high and flower spike can reach 24" (60cm)

BACHELOR'S BUTTON

 

Bachelor's Button is actually an annual or biennial. They propagate by dropping seeds, which makes them worthy of being a perennial. They have narrow blue-green leaves. Flower heads are usually blue. Flower season is from late spring to summer, deadheading will prolong the flowering. They prefer sunny conditions, grow 8-16" wide (20-24cm) and 12-36" high (30-90cm)

BEE BALM 

 

Bee Balm is a member of the mint family. They form large clumps, dying away completely in winter but recovering quickly in spring. Butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other nectar-seeking creatures covet the tubular flowers on the plant's rounded flower heads, and the leaves and flowers can also be made into tea. They bloom from early to late summer and can grow 2 to 4 feet tall.

BLEEDING HEART

 

Bleeding heart has attractive mounded foliage with arching stems of delicate, heart-shaped flowers in spring. It thrives in moist woodland gardens along with ferns and other shade-lovers. It blooms in spring and may rebloom sporadically throughout the summer in cool areas. Height ranges from 6 inches to 2 feet, depending on variety. They are deer resistant.

CRIMSON PINCUSHION

 

A bushy growing perennial noted for its long blooming double crimson red pincushion flowers from summer to fall. Excellent in the border and Container, providing interesting color. A great cut flower. Attracts butterflies. Drought tolerant once established. They prefer full sun; grow 12-24" wide and 24-36" high, flowering from summer to fall.

DAISY - ICE STAR

 

 

They are easy perennials that perform best in a sunny border. This midsized selection has double shaggy white petals surrounding a yellow button eye. Removing faded flowers will greatly increase the blooming time. Good strong stems support the blooms well. They prefer sunny to partial shade. They flower from early to late summer. They attract butterflies and are rabbit resistant. They grow 18-20" high and spread 18-24".

GOOSENECK LOOSESTRIFE

 

Gooseneck Loosestrife produces unique spikes of white flowers that are bent like a goose’s neck, appearing in late summer. Wonderful for cutting. Plants quickly spread to form a wide patch, so allow it room. Has a tendency to take over in a perennial border: place this carefully. Excellent at the waterside or in a moist location. Foliage develops good red fall colour, particularly when grown in full sun. Clumps are easily divided in the spring. New growth is late to emerge from the ground, often waiting until well into May. Attractive to butterflies. They prefer full sun or partial shade, average to moist soil. Flowers are white and are rabbit resistant. They grow 23-35" can spread 29 to 35" wide.

HELIOPSIS - ASAHI

 

False Sunflowers are reliable for their very long season of bloom. This selection forms a midsized, bushy clump of dark green leaves, bearing branching heads of large golden-yellow fully double daisy flowers. An outstanding cut flower. Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly extend the blooming season. Should not require staking. Plants may be divided in early spring. Easy and always rewarding. Flowers are attractive to butterflies. They prefer full sun, sandy, clay or normal soil that is moist. They bloom from early summer to mid fall. They grow 27-29" high and spread 18-23"wide

IRIS

 

Grow in fertile moist soil. Good for the edge of ponds. Blooms from May to July depending in variety. They prefer sun. They grow up to 3' depending on variety.

MALTESE CROSS

 

Maltese Cross is a rugged and easy perennial for any sunny border. Plants form an upright clump of bright green leaves, with taller stems in summer that bear large clusters of scarlet-orange flowers. Excellent for cutting. In rich soils this may need to be staked to prevent flopping. Reliable and long lived. Clumps may be easily divided in spring or fall. Flowers are attractive to butterflies, and possibly even hummingbirds. They prefer full sun, sandy, clay or normal soil, with average to moist soil. They bloom from early summer to late summer. They grow 35-47" high and spread 12-18" wide.

 

OBEDIENT PLANT (Pink or White)

 

These plants are hardy, and are easily grown in full or half sun, in moist well-drained soil. Plants form an upright, bushy clump of deep green leaves, bearing showy spikes of white or pink flowers from midsummer through the fall. They are attractive to butterflies. They grow 29-35" high and spread 23-35"wide.

PEONY (red or white)

 

Peonies prefer well drained loamy soil. Spray regularly with a fungicide to avoid Botrytis. Easy to grow and maintain. Plant root system so that the eyes are no more than 1 1/2”to 2” below soil. Flower from May to June. They prefer full to part sun. They grow 3' high.

 

PHLOX

 

They prefer well drained soil, in full to part sun. They are sweetly fragrant. They attract butterflies. Blooms occur from July to September. they grow up to 40" high and spread 17-23" wide.
